Gov't announces Mitre, Sarmiento carriages to be replaced

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner announced that all the coaches of the Sarmiento and Mitre train lines will be renovated. The Government will buy new carriages from China, but will train local workers so that all repairs and maintenance are carried out in Argentina.

The renovations "are expected to benefit over 8 million people who ride on both railways daily," the President added in nationwide-televised speech.

Regarding the subway, which was transferred over to the City officially on January 1st, Fernández de Kirchner stressed the fact that 40 of new carriages of Line A were purchased by the National Government. She also added that a $3.80 subway fare is ‘outrageous’.

The ceremony began at 7pm and the Head of State was accompanied by Interior and Transport Minister Florencio Randazzo.

After the rally, Fernández de Kirchner began her official trip, heading firstly towards Havana, Cuba, in order to visit her Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chávez, who remains hospitalized since the last surgery.
