ARA Libertad sails past Brazil, Mar del Plata bound

ARA Libertad frigate is set to arrive in Mar del Plata port on January 9, 2013, after being held in a Ghana port since October over a debt dispute with a US hedge fund.

The ARA Libertad frigate, an Argentine navy training ship, is currently sailing close to the city of Salvador de Bahía in Brazil, some 1,350 kilometres from the coast, on its way to Argentina. The ship is expected to arrive in Mar del Plata port on January 9th, the Defence Ministry said.

The frigate left Ghana on December 19 with a 143-strong crew on board after being detained for 78 days illegally in Ghana, where the local judiciary had ordered its detention in response to a judicial plea pushed by a US hedge fund over ‘vulture funds’.

The decision was finally revoked on December 15, when the UN’s International Tribunal of the Sea based in Hamburg intervened, and rules in favour of the Argentine government regarding the ship’s detention.
