Audi’s A1 family growing

By Carlos A. Pefaur

Earlier this year Audi introduced in Europe a more functional version of its A1. It was the 5-door Sportback, which is now joining the domestic market.

The A1 hasn’t modified in either its design or it size (it is just a few millimetres wider and taller and still 3.95 metres long) compared to its 3-door predecessor. With this new version, the German automaker is seeking to expand its range to strengthen the great commercial success the model has had in the local market: after less than two years (it arrived in March 2011) it has sold 2,700 3-door A1s.

Still powered with the same engine: the 1.4 TFSI petrol (122 hp or 185 horsepower), it accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 7 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 227 kph. The 122HP version can be mated to a six-speed manual transmission or an automatic six-speed S-Tronic gearbox; while the most powerful version comes coupled to a seven-speed S-Tronic gearbox.

The interior design remains unchanged except for the addition of some compartments and holders. In its rear part, we saw a slight increase in space, plus a third seat as optional. Each seat has its three-point belt and headrest.

The trunk offers a volume ranging from 270 to 920 litres, when the rear seats are folded.

As standard, it includes remote central-lock, electric door mirrors, MMI multimedia interface with a 6.5-inch colour display, on-board computer, dual-zone automatic climate control, concert radio and front height-adjustable sport seats with lumbar support. Safety equipment includes eight airbags: two front, two side-impact thorax and pelvis airbags, four head airbags for both front and rear seats and Isofix for child safety seats.

The Ambition version features 16-inch alloy wheels, chrome exhaust-pipes and fog lamps.

Likewise, the S line version includes 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, sports suspension and bumpers, aluminum moldings, a rear S line design spoiler and interior LED lights.

As optional, users can add xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED tail-lights, panoramic sunroof, Audi parking system (two versions available), and cruise control, among others.

Retail prices range from 34,600 to 48,820 dollars, depending on the version
