Looting attempt on San Fernando supermarket spurs tension
In this television screen grab shot, an armed infantry officer is seen patrolling the front of the San Fernando Carrefour hypermarket after 300 people tried to loot it.
Tension was created between military officers and residents of the San Fernando area after three hundred people tried to ransack and loot the Carrefour hypermarket on the Panamerican highway.
The attempt took place at the Route 202 junction of the motorway.
The group was armed with sticks and stones on the before moving in on the supermarket.
Police intervened just as the looters started grabbing shopping trolleys in the supermarket’s front car park.
Infantry officers were deployed to the area in order to control the situation, as residents began to clash with police, throwing rocks and stones.
