Mercosur accepts Bolivia's membership during Summit in Brasilia

Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff leads the Summit of Heads of State of the Mercosur and Associated States at Itamaraty Palace, Brasilia.

The Summit for Heads of State of Mercosur began today in Brasilia, where they signed a Support Treaty for the incorporation of Bolivia to the regional bloc, despite doubts coming from Ecuador, an associated country of the bloc.

Paraguay, member suspended since June 29 due to the impeachment that removed President Fernando Lugo from power, did not sign the agreement.

The document contains an explicit reference to this fact, in which states that Ushuaia Protocol over the democratic commitment of the Mercosur member-countries, and reminds the sanction applied to Paraguay.

The summit saw Rousseff, Fernández de Kirchner (Argentina), José Mujica (Uruguay), Evo Morales (Bolivia) and Rafael Correa (Ecuador) meet today. Venezuelan Vice-President Nicolás Maduro attended instead of President Hugo Chávez.

Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman, Economy Minister Hernán Lorenzino and Industry Minister Débora Giorgi also took part of the regional bloc summit.
