Metrovías, subway workers near an agreement

Subway workers are considering strike action this week, should the newest meeting with Metrovías not result in an agreement over wage hikes.

The secretary-general of the ASGTyP union, Roberto Pianelli, affirmed that there will be another meeting between Subway workers and Metrovías "tomorrow at 11am," in which they expect they will "reach an agreement."

"We are discussing the retroactive of the collective bargain," Pianelli continued as he left the encounter with the representatives of the company held at the Buenos Aires City Labour Secretariat.

“We are about to close the wage talks,” the union director had told reporters before entering the ministry.

Metrovías made a wage offer to Subway workers today, after meeting with members of the breakaway Subte workers union (AGTSyP) this afternoon.

Today’s meeting was aimed at averting strike action.

The possibility of a strike had been announced last Thursday by Pianelli, after disappointing salary adjustment negotiations with Metrovías.

The union is demanding a 28 percent salary increase and between 1.3 and 2 percent adjustment in accordance to seniority, dating back to last March. Even though the subway workers received a fixed $900 pesos sum increase in May and a 23 percent increase in their basic salary in September, the spokesman said “we want an increase, that besides being bigger, incorporates reimbursements.”

Last Thursday, subway workers allowed passengers to ride for free for two hours, after already striking for ten days last August causing difficulties for commuters.
