'Teachers strike is inopportune,' Scioli

Buenos Aires province Governor Daniel Scioli

Buenos Aires province governor Daniel Scioli deemed today the upcoming teachers’ strike as “inopportune.” “Even though strike is a constutional right, under these circumstances I consider it inopportune.”

Scioli recalled the fact that Buenos Aires province teachers will hold the fourth strike of the year and with only two weeks to go until classes are over, he urged union leaders to reconsider.

“I ask them to make an effort and reconsider the measure,” Scioli said as he commemorated Militant Day.

The Union Front, conformed by five teacher unions will strije next Thursday and Friday to claim for wage talks to be resumed.

On Friday, Buenos Aires province Education Department director Nora de Lucía blasted the strike and deemed it as shameful, irrational and a lack of respect to the entire society.”

The government official recalled that during 2011 teachers striked for almost a month. “We had meetings with unions regarding labour Elath, job conditions ant it seems that certain union leaders don’t want to debate inside the classrooms.”

Mirta Petrocini, of the FEB union, defended the measure and said that the strike would be unjustified if schools were in good conditions and salaries were paid in due form.
