Argentina to sue Ghana before int'l court if frigate not liberated
Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and Defence Minister Arturo Puricelli gave a press conference at the Government House to respond to Ghana's government over the seizing of the ARA Libertad frigate and the plan to cut off all supplies.
Speaking to reporters, Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman explained that "Tuesday is the deadline for the Ghanaian government to lift the embargo of the Libertad frigate, recognizing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas."
He added, "If that doesn't happen, Argentina will then be able to report Ghana before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, based in Hamburg. Argentine legal representatives are already in that city to begin the process."On Sunday, Ghana threatened to cut off supplies to the frigate after crewmembers prevented Ghanaian port authorities from boarding and moving the detained ship to another port.
Likewise, the African nation presented on Monday a “failure to comply” court order to the Ghanaian justice system.
The frigate ARA Libertad, a naval training ship, was detained in Ghana's eastern port of Tema on October 2 at the request of NML Capital Ltd, which claims Argentina owes it US$300 million on bonds in default since 2002.
