Obama wins straw vote at US ambassador’s residence in BA

The US Embassy in Buenos Aires last night held a reception to follow the results of the US presidential elections. Attending were business leaders, including Cristiano Rattazzi, Gerardo Werthein, Mario Montoto and Guillermo Stanley.

Executives of the media group Clarín were also in attendance. Politicians present included Senator María Eugenia Estenssoro, dissident Peronist Deputy Alfredo Atanasoff, Unión por Todos Deputy Patricia Bullrich, former Frepaso presidential candidate José Octavio Bordón (winner of a number of Fulbright grants) and Buenos Aires City government officials.

Academic Carlos Escudé was seen chatting amiably about US politics with students.

The event, held at the US ambassador’s residency, was predictably also packed with journalists. Republican and Democratic merchandising was distributed to the guests, while lifesize cutouts of the two presidential candidates were on display at the entrance of the residence.

The results of the straw vote last night, cast by those munching on cheeseburgers and hotdogs? Barack Obama 167, Mitt Romney 56.
