Three men arrested in connection to attack on British tourist

Three men were arrested at the request of the courts in Jujuy province investigating the sexual abuse reported by a 25-year-old British tourist last Thursday in the city of Tilcara.

The young woman said she was raped by a man that attacked her while visiting, together with a friend, the tourist location known as Garganta del Diablo in Tilcara, some 40 kilometres from Jujuy’s capital city.

A provincial court detained three men who are suspected of having participated in the abuse but due to the victim’s state of shock, the case remains unsolved, sources said.

The assault occurred on Thursday evening when the young woman, from the English city of Weston, was visiting Tilcara.

The victim was in a state of shock and considered flying back to the United Kingdom immediately, but her friend and law officials managed to convince her to carry on cooperating with the investigation in order to apprehend the culprit.

The investigation is in the hands of prosecutor Miguel Ángel Lemir, who established an office in Tilcara with a group of local forensic experts. Also, the British Embassy in Buenos Aires intervened in the investigation.

During her testimony, the victim gave very few details of the assailant due to her state of shock. However, she described him as a “tall and dark-skinned” and said that she had been threatened with a knife and taken to an isolated place where she was sexually assaulted.

The complaint was filed by the owner of a hostel, who accompanied the victim and her friend to the local police station. The case is presided over by Regional Prosecutor Daniel Paredes.
