Fighting, attacks across Syria as ceasefire frays
Demostrators protest against Syria''s President Bashar al-Assad.
Fighting across Syria and a large car bomb which exploded near a children's playground in southern Damascus killed several people today as a ceasefire brokered by international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to mark a holy Muslim day frayed almost before it had begun.
Syria's army command said it had responded to several attacks by rebel forces on military positions across the country.
Violence appeared to wane in some areas, but violations by both sides swiftly marred Syrians' hopes of celebrating Eid al-Adha, the climax of the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca, in peace.
