Gendarmerie, Coast Guard meet new chiefs
Gendarmerie and retired, off duty Coast Guard officers met with their new chiefs in order to find a solution to the conflict, after Security Minister Nilda Garré relieved the heads of the forces.
The security forces decided to continue with the strike despite the government's announcement that they were to ensure their salary payments to be made as normal.
The Gendarmerie officers gathered at the Centinela buiding told the press that "our idea is to stay" until they find a solution, that would be to achieve a hike in their salary floor to $7,000 pesos for the lower posts.
"We support democracy. This is not a political uprising. It's nothing strange," officer Fernando Parodi shouted into a bullhorn at a rally in front of military police headquarters in Buenos Aires, where hundreds of olive-green clad officers chanted slogans in solidarity.
"We are workers, like any others, who need to support our families," Parodi said.
Deputy Border Guard officials arrived to the protest carried out outside the Centinela building in Buenos Aires City, where national Gendarmerie were demanding “wage conciliation” talks be opened with the Security Ministry, in order to discuss the next steps.
Gendarmerie officers joined in on the rally which has been being carried out since Tuesday by Coast Guard officials.
The officials from both sides have said they would only lift the protests “once they are shown a concrete wage offer.”
The protests were resumed this morning at 5 am and in addition to the downtown area of Buenos Aires, officers across different parts of the country were also taking part, including in Rosario, Mar del Plata, Quequén, Zárate, Jesús María, Posadas, Paso de los Libres, La Plata, Dock Sud, Ensenada, Barranqueras, Comodoro Rivadavia and Río Gallegos.
Coast guard officials began protesting yesterday, against the passing of a recent decree that has been said to have decreased their salaries by “between 30 to 60 percent.”
Secretary of Security Sergio Berni had asked for a 24-hour period to come up with a solution. Negotiations with Berni and Economy Minister Hernán Lorenzino yesterday failed.
