Bullrich to comply with judge's order, rules out talking to students

Last Thursday, thousands of students at Buenos Aires secondary schools marched on the Education Ministry.

City Education Minister Esteban Bullrich assured he will comply with Judge Elena  Liberatori’s summoning, but insisted he will not speak to the students leading the school takeovers.

“Dialogue takes place when schools are open, not when schools are closed. A closed school has no dialogue, it is like a closed mouth or a ear that does not listen,” he said in a communiqué.

Buenos Aires judge Elena Liberatori called on the city’s Education Minister to start dialoguing with secondary students as they continue to stage sit-in protests in 41 schools throughout the Buenos Aires City and Province.

Students are demonstrating against a syllabus reform that the Buenos Aires City government is pushing forward.

The takeovers have been ongoing for sixteen days now.

Liberatori presented a formal request calling for the official to meet with the students tomorrow at noon at a Buenos Aires court located downtown.

In a radio interview yesterday, Bullrich slammed the students by saying the protest lacks a “legitimate claim.”

Last Thursday, thousands of secondary school students in the City marched to the Education Ministry, where they demanded a meeting with Bullrich, who later refused to meet with them.
