Students takeover 34 schools, march to Education Ministry in BA

Students took over 34 schools in Buenos Aires City and Greater marched today to city Education Ministry in order to reject curriculum reforms backed by Education Minister Esteban Bullrich.

Protesters marched rom the Pizzurno Palace towards the City Education Ministry located in Paseo Colón 200.

Students have recently rejected a commitment letter of the city administration promising informational workshops to explain the curriculum reform. They also ask for the suspension of the new reforms until 2013 and to leave it for public debate.

Mariano Acosta school representative Lucía Frasco said the students are demanding a meeting with the city’s education minister in order to halt the new polices to be applied.

“If Bullrich doesn’t meet us we will expand our action until he does,” the student leader remarked.

The takeover started ten days ago. Yesterday, some students took their indignation over the reform to the streets and some teacher decided to teach outdoors.

Students complain the new curriculum includes less hours of extra activities such as art education, lab, civic education amongst other cuts.
