Senate approves Banco Ciudad bill

The Senate approved the law that passes court funds from Banco Ciudad to Banco Nación, with 39 votes in favour of the measure and 25 against. The law was passed after an intense, six hour debate and as the Banco Ciudad employeed staged a protest outside Congress to reject the measure.

The session began just after 2 pm this afternoon, where the Labour Parliamentary Committee gathered the heads of all party blocs.

Two district senators María Eugenia Estenssoro and Samuel Cabanchik had anticipated that they were to vote against the bill, which was put forward by Kirchernite lawmaker Diana Conti.

Former education minister Daniel Filmus and current Senator for the City district voted in favour of the measure, despite doubts on which stance he would take, after he had not attended any of the plenary sessions of three committees and also had not shed light on his preference prior to today's session.

The bill had already been approved by the Lower House of Congress, with approval by the Senate being the remaining factor in order for it to be passed.

Senators also to debated a declaration bill from the Victory Front caucus in order to condemn a front cover released on the latest edition of the magazine Noticias, considering that it “degraded” the image of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
