Malvinas 2012 census shows residents as 59% islanders, 29% British

A Malvinas government census showed today the total resident population of the Malvinas Islands was 2,841 inhabitants.

A Malvinas government census showed today the total resident population of the Malvinas Islands was 2,841 inhabitants. The census also demonstrated that 59% of residents consider their national identity to be ' Islander' and 29% consider themselves British; 9.8% St Helenian, and 5.4 per cent Chilean, local newspaper Penguin News informed today.

The new numbers represent a decrease of 4% since 2006, a decline entirely attributable to the decrease in the number of civilian contractors at Mount Pleasant Airfield (MPA), the article says.

According to the island press, excluding contractors at MPA, the true population figure of the Falkland Islands is 2,563 – indicating that the population has remained static since 2006.

Port Stanley, the islands’ capital, is home to 2121 people, 75 per cent of the population, an increase of less than 1% since 2006.

The population in Camp (areas outside of Stanley) has declined by 3.3 per cent to 351 people.
