Pro-government lawmakers back youth vote bill

Pro-government lawmakers from both the Upper and Lower House of Congress expressed their support of the bill being debated by the Constitutional Affairs Committee, which if passed into law, will allow 16 to 18-year-olds the chance to vote in the presidential election.

Victory Front Senator Aníbal Fernández underlined that all of the political parties should “conquer the vote” for young people, “not be afraid of them” and “put together a speech that will be able to reach” the youngsters.

“Anyone who participates in the politics of Argentine people and doesn’t have the vocation to conquer this vote doesn’t understand anything about politics.

“We need not fear this, we have to work toward it and we will keep on advancing further in the subject,” said the former Cabinet Chief in an interview this morning on local radio.

Another lawmaker to underline his support for the bill, was the head of the Victory Front caucus in the Lower House Agustín Rossi, who considered it to be “a sign that the State is involving young people in politics.”

“If this law is passed it will allow the expansion of a growing phenomenon in the Bicentenary generation, involving more and more youngsters in politics, which is truly moving,” the national lawmaker said in an interview with a local television station.
