Alak meets with Blumberg
Justice Minister Julio Alak met yesterday with Juan Carlos Blumberg, whose son Axel was kidnapped and murdered in 2004, and admitted that the head of the federal prison service SPF had “made a mistake” with a project that enabled prisoners to leave on day-release to participate in political rallies.
According to reports, Alak admitted that the Vatayón Militante project implemented by Federal Penitentiary Service head Víctor Hortel had been an error. The Díaz brothers, convicted of kidnapping and murdering Axel Blumberg, were two prisoners able to take advantage of the opportunities offered by Vatayón Militante.
Despite assuring Blumberg that Vatayón Militante had been discontinued, and promising him further meetings with Security Minister Nilda Garré and that President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner had asked him to “review” the situation, Alak stopped short of firing Hortel.
