Independiente oust Boca to advance

Independiente advanced to the last 16 round of the South American Cup yesterday after drawing 0-0 with Boca Juniors at the Libertadores de América stadium in Avellaneda in the return leg of their second round series. The hosts, who will sign Américo Gallego as their new coach today, will face the winners of the tie between Liverpool of Uruguay and Envigado of Colombia.

Independiente reached the next round with the away-goal rule, as in the first leg last week they drew 3-3 at La Bombonera.

The team coached by Enrique Borrelli, who will be Gallego’s assistant, played almost the whole second half with ten players after captain Eduardo Tuzzio was sent off with a second yellow card. However, they managed to keep their away-goal advantage.

Also yesterday, Nacional of Uruguay defeated Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Loja 1-0 in Ecuador in the first leg of their second round tie. Sebastián Taborda scored the winning goal in the 62th minute. The return leg will be on September 18 in Montevideo.

Today, Argentinos Juniors will visit Tigre, while Racing will play against Colón at home.
