OAS backs Ecuador in Assange conflict

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange addresses the press and his supporters from the balcony of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

The Organization of American States (OAS) gave its support to Ecuador over the conflict with United Kingdom over the diplomatic asylum granted by the andean country to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

During a meeting held in Washington, the Foreign Ministers of the OAS member countries, except Canada, approved the resolution in which it states its "solidarity and support" to the Government of Ecuador, considering the threat as a hostile and intolerable action.

The UK had threatened it would revoke the diplomatic status of Quito's embassy in London to allow the extradition of the WikiLeaks founder to Sweden, where he wanted for questioning on sex allegations.

The OAS reiterated "the obligation of all states not to invoke provisions of their domestic law to justify noncompliance with their international obligations."

After the resolution, Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño ratified the region's support against UK's threat.
