BA province: At least 850 flood victims still in shelters

Last week''s rains caused hundreds to go to temporary shelters.

At least 850 people evacuated from their homes in Buenos Aires province after last week’s heavy rains remain in community shelters, the provincial emergency service’s chief Luciano Timerman informed today.

The most critical situation can be seen at Gregorio de Laferrere in La Matanza district, Timerman said, where 680 people are sheltered in five local schools turned into community refuges.

Flood evacuated victims also remain on shelters at Arrecifes, Pilar, San Pedro and Rauch.

“We haven’t registered the presence of showers for days now and the situation is going back to normal. But, unfortunately, we forecast rain for Wednesday”, Timerman said.

“We hope the rains are not severe and basins don’t flood. We expected people to stay an extra day at the shelters before their homes are cleaned and disinfected but, after that, they should return to their houses”, the official concluded.
