Racing beat Independiente 2-0

Racing Club’s José Sand celebrates after scoring against Independiente.
José Sand scored twice in Racing’s 2-0 victory over arch-rivals Independiente in the Avellaneda’s derby yesterday. River Plate beat Tigre in Victoria 3-2 with goals by Daniel Villalva, Carlos Sánchez and Manuel Lanzini. 

Racing beat Independiente 2-0 in the Avellaneda’s derby yesterday at the Juan Domingo Perón stadium to climb to the top of the standings after the third round of the Initial Tournament.

Striker José Sand scored both goals for Luis Zubeldía’s team, who share the lead with Colón and Godoy Cruz.

Independiente finished the game with ten players after Paraguayan defender Claudio Morel Rodríguez was sent off with a second yellow card in the 45th minutes.

Racing continue unbeaten in the competition, while their arch-rivals have not won a match yet and have not scored a goal either.

Sand put the hosts ahead in the 29th minute after a pass by forward Gabriel Hauche. It was his first goal with Racing’s shirt. The former Lanús, Colón and River Plate striker netted another one in the 74th to seal the 2-0 victory.

The bad news for Racing came in the 81st when goalkeeper and captain Sebatián Saja had to be replaced due to a right leg injury. Jorge de Olivera took his place.

Independiente will debut in the South American Cup 2012 on Wednesday, when they will visit Boca Juniors in the first leg of their series.

Also yesterday, River and Tigre played an exciting match at the Monumental de Victoria stadium where Matías Almeyda’s side beat the hosts 3-2.

Daniel Villalva, Carlos Sánchez and Manuel Lanzini scored for River, while Lucas Orban and Diego Ftacla netted for Tigre.

It was also be a special match for forward Carlos Luna, top scorer of the Clausura tournament, who left Tigre to join River and faced his old team.

Earlier, Lanús cut a run of two straight defeats to win their first match in the tournament yesterday, when they beat Vélez Sársfield 2-0 at the José Amalfitani stadium

Mauricio Pereyra put the visitors ahead in the 61st and Víctor Ayala doubled the difference in the 82nd with a powerful shot from outside the box.

In another game, Godoy Cruz reached the top of the standings with a 2-0 home victory over Atlético Rafaela at the Malvinas Argentinas stadium in Mendoza.

Maulo Óbolo and Emiliano Insúa scored for the hosts in the fourth and 45th minutes respectively.

Godoy Cruz are still unbeaten in the competition, while Rafaela got their only point in the first round when they drew 1-1 with Racing.
