Subway: another day of strike looms as workers fail to obtain answer from City gov't

The subway workers announced on a televised press conference that they were willing to wait until midnight to reach an agreement with the Metrovías company and the City government to put and end to the subway strike, but as the deadline passed with no response, the subway service seemed headed to its tenth day of strike.

The workers, however, assured that they reject the mandatory conciliation issued by the City Government last Thursday and the sanction that followed after they decided not to abide by it.

They also said they would press charges against mayor Mauricio Macri before the International Labour Organization for trying to “hindering their right to strike.”

“We do not accept the mandatory conciliation process,” the workers’ lawyer, Luis Ramírez, said.

The workers assured before the cameras that, by issuing a mandatory conciliation, the City government was “criminalizing their constitutional right to strike.”

“This is a political decision by Mauricio Macri. The right to strike is a human right that is fundamental to workers. The persecution of workers on strike is like going back a hundred years,” Ramírez assured.

He also said that the conciliation is “illegal” because it was issued by the City’s Labour Under Secretary, which “does not have any authority in this matter.”

They further claimed that the industrial action will continue for “an indefinite period of time,” which means the service will not be resumed today, for the 9th consecutive day.

Interior and Transport Minister Florencio Randazzo dismissed yesterday Buenos Aires City Mayor Mauricio Macri’s words when he accused union leaders of working for the national government and questioned the mayor’s “stubbornness” on taking control of the subway service.
