City Gov't fines unionists on strike nearly 5 million pesos

The City Government sanctioned today the dissident subway workers –currently leading the longest subway strike in Argentine history, lasting a total of eight days so far- for five million pesos and reported them to the Judiciary and to the national Labour Ministry.

The Subsecretary of Labour for the City Government, applied a fine of 4,933,000 pesos and put forward the case to the national Labour Ministry run by Carlos Tomada.

Earlier today, Deputy Mayor for Buenos Aires City María Eugenia Vidal commented on the strike and assured that “the breakaway union subway workers have less excuses to continue with the strike everyday” and reiterated that “they are responding to the National Government.”

 “Today I don’t know what their excuse is and the only thing we can come up with, aside from the arbitrary behaviour of the union members, is that this has stopped being about a wage conflict, and has converted into a political rift as we know that they are responding to the National Government,” Vidal said.
