Alicia Castro attends Las Leonas gold medal match
The Argentine Ambassador to the United Kingdom Alicia Castro attended the women’s gold medal hockey match between Argentina and the Netherlands at the Olympic Park in London today.
The visit to the Olympic Games comes after a recent series of uncomfortable political exchanges between Argentina and the United Kingdom, surrounding negotiation talks over the soveriegnty of the Malvinas Islands.
In the upcoming weeks prior to the Games, a television spot made by the Argentine Government caused diplomatic stir, when an Argentine athlete was filmed training on a British war memorial on the Malvinas Islands.
Castro, who yesterday held a reception at the Argentine Embassy in celebration of the Olympics, to which the Argentine Olympic Committee and national sport authorities attended, was in the stalls today supporting Argentina’s champion hockey team.
“We all very much want to gain the gold,” the Ambassador said, “but whichever way, the important thing is to prove the great capacity and preparation of our sportsmen and women to be able to compete at an international level.”
