City doctors stage strike

Doctors from the 33 hospitals managed by the Buenos Aires City government staged a 24-hour strike on Thursday to demand security and reject the violent incidents which have taken place recently, the association grouping health professionals reported yesterday.

The industrial action was decided after workers from the Santojanni Hospital were attacked by a group of vandals who accused doctors of malpractice. Professionals working at that hospital have already began a strike yesterday which will continue today.

On Monday morning 60 people, mostly women, burst into the building calling for justice for Jennifer Frías, a 19-year-old girl who died three days after giving birth at the Santojanni Hospital.

Santojanni’s director Eduardo Tognetti met yesterday with Frías’ relatives and their attorneys, who once again reported “abandonment” and “malpractice.” The hospital authorities pledged to provide all the medical information to the court probing this case and said Jennifer’s family was not involved in the attack.

Meanwhile, nurses and administrative employees from city hospitals gathered in front of the City Hall building yesterday and decided to set camp as a way to protest over the shortage of staff and the lack of security, protesters said.

Deputy Mayor María Eugenia Vidal said the assailants who broke into the Santojanni Hospital “may have been a political mob” and urged the national government to take charge of the hospitals’ security once again.
