Gils Garbó's appointment as Procurator General cleared for debate
The Government’s letter requesting Alejandra Gils Carbó’s appointment as Procurator General was cleared for debate by the Senate's Agreements Committee and will be debated on the floor on August 15th.
Gils Carbó attended the hearing and rejected the critiques against her running for the position, for not being a specialist in criminal law, and reaffirmed that her function would be “to defend the interests of society.”
The candidate for Procurator General for the Senate said that half of the procurators designated in the last decades were not specialists in criminal law and underlined her 18 year stead within the public sphere, something she defined as “home.”
Yesterday President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner took the opportunity to mention today's process in her speech at the Government House, reaffirming her support for Gils Carbó's designation for the role.
The final step of the process will take place on August 15th, when senators will vote for her appointment as the new Procurator General, an office currently vacant since Esteban Righi resigned amidst accusations of influence peddling by Vice-President Amado Boudou.
Gils Carbó’s appointment was suggested by the Fernández de Kirchner administration after former candidate to the office Daniel Reposo withdrew his bid to replace Righi last month.
