Pharaoh Den’s funeral boat found in Egypt

In this undated picture provided by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities an archaeologist is seen working on the skeleton of a newly discovered wooden boat at the Abu Rawash archaeological compound, west of Cairo.

A team of French archaeologists uncovered today a wooden funeral boat which belonged to Pharaoh Den, from the first dynasty in Egypt, dating back to 3000 BC, the Egyptian Antiquities Ministry informed.

In a written communiqué, the ministry’s head Mohamed Ibrahim highlighted that the boat was found in good condition and was located in the archaeological compound of Abu Rawash, in Guiza province, to the west of Cairo.

The group of archaeologists discovered a roughly 5,000-year-old pharaonic solar boat, measuring six-metres long and 1.5 metres wide, said to have belonged to Pharaoh Den, during an expedition.

The pieces were taken to the rehabilitation centre at the Grand Egyptian Museum, where they will be conserved before being exhibited in the salón dedicated to the River Nile in the National Museum for Egyptian Civilization.
