Unions split over strike

The strike and demonstration called for today at Plaza de Mayo by Hugo Moyano, secretary-general for both the teamsters and the CGT union umbrella group, won support and rejections. The protest called by Moyano demands raising the income tax floor, universal child benefits and school aid.

Unions backing Moyano at the CGT leadership, restaurant workers leader Luis Barrionuevo, some opposition political parties and social organizations will be present at the rally in Plaza de Mayo, while the so-called “Fat Cats”, the “independent” unions, both CTA Argentine workers unions and farm leaders will be absent.

Auto industry union, UOM metal workers union, chemists’ employees and the advertising union rejected the walkout and pointed out the need to deepen the “National People’s Project” embraced by the government, while CATT transport workers union and Argentine Municipal Employees Union backed the Plaza de Mayo demonstration. Those unions published adverts in different newspapers confirming their position.

“The legitimacy of claims put forward, which had been demanded by all the unions, seem in this case an argument only to justify a personal and political action against a government, which was elected by 54 percent of Argentines,” said the UOM’s advert, the union led by Antonio Caló, main rival of Moyano at the CGT elections to be held on July 12.

CATT stated: “Unions that belong to CATT will demonstrate in the Plaza de Mayo, following the rules that each organization decides, in order to guarantee the normal working of transport for the rally and trying, if possible, to avoid delays.”

The teamsters, the union which organized the rally, will gather at 9 at the intersection of Belgrano Avenue and 9 de Julio and will move to Plaza de Mayo in front of the Government House.

Leaving aside differences, the dissident ‘Blue and White’ CGT led by restaurant worker Barrionuevo will gather at midday at the intersection of Avenida de Mayo and 9 de Julio to march to the rally.

The dissident CTA, headed by Pablo Micheli, supports the strike but will not protest because they said “we were not invited.”

Likewise, the opposition political parties, including the Board Progressive Front (FAP), dissident Peronists, the Civic Radical Union (UCR) and Project South showed solidarity with the CGT demands but they will not attend the demonstration. However, the political groups confirmed that they will advance with different income tax related bills in Congress.

The FAA Small Farmers Federation, headed by Eduardo Buzzi, said that “although the demands are legitimate, we will not attend the rally.”

Anti-Moyano factions at the CGT, including shop workers, power employees, healthcare, UOCRA construction workers, UTA transport union, La Fraternidad railway workers and taxi-drivers, reject the strike.
