River Plate in shock; lose 1-0 to Patronato

River Plate suffered a major strike to their hopes of promotion as Patronato put Matias Almeyda's men in shock with a 1-0 victory. It was Leonardo Acosta with a powerful header who muted the thousands of River fans that travelled to Colon's stadium in Santa Fe province, where the game was held.

Frustration piled up as the minutes ran away for the white and red powerhouse. Furthermore, Alejandro Domínguez missed a penalty shot with only three minutes from the final whistle.

Now River Plate (70 points), who will face Almirante Brown in a must-win last game at the Monumental Stadium next weekend, will watch closely tomorrow's action between Rosario Central and Chacarita Juniors as the former trail by one point with two games to play.

Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba (70 points) shares the top with River Plate after they beat Deportivo Merlo 2-0 today in an early match played at Almagro's stadium at noon.

As solid as usual, Quilmes Athletic Club swept Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy with a solid 4-0 to set things on fire and approach the top of the table with 69 points.
