FAA hopes to find 'dialogue and consensus' with Scioli

As the farmers strike in the Buenos Aires province continues, the vice-president of the Argentine Agrarian Federation (FAA), Guillermo Gianassi, said he still hopes “the can find some dialogue and consensus with governor Daniel Scioli.”

Gianassi made these statements on the second day of the strike, which was decided on Thursday after the BA province legislature passed a new law that authorized the government to a tax hike and land reform.

“We’re upset because we couldn’t discuss this with the government. We listened to the governor say he doesn’t want to hurt anyone with this, but if that were true he would have called us to talk about it and we would have all been happy. But since they know that what he says it’s not true, they never contacted us,” Gianassi said.

“Every law can be revised and amended. This law, as it is now, creates a brutal impact on thousands of farmers in the province,” he added.

The FAA vice-president recalled that “tax pressure nowadays is very high. The last report on the matter shows that from very 100 pesos earned, we lose 84 in taxes and distortions somewhere along the way of the chain of production. Small farmers have to make a double effort, because bigger producers find it easier to resist.”

At the same time, the head of the FAA, Eduardo Buzzi, charged against Domestic Trade Secretary Guillermo Moreno.

“Farmers strongly disapprove of Moreno. He always ends up benefitting corporations and affecting producers, while hurting consumers at the same time. He exerts a very high level of authoritarianism that is not in sync with a President that is widely supported by the population,” he expressed.

He concluded by saying that Moreno “is a person carrying out whatever the President orders him to do.”
