Malvinas islanders head to the UK in search of oil expertise

A group of 30 members from the Malvinas Islands’ Legislative Assembly is heading today to the Aberdeen, Scotland, in search of expertise from specialists of a place known as Europe’s oil capital. According to the Scottish media, it is the largest islander’s official mission to ever visit the United Kingdom.

The visit to Aberdeen was organised by the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce (AGCC) in association with the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands chamber and “is aimed at discussing opportunities for closer working relationships between the Falklands (Malvinas) and businesses in the north east of Scotland.”

The delegation is to spend three days in the city and is expected to visit the city’s oil port and hold talks with a number of North Sea companies.

“A key component of the visit will be to give the delegates the opportunity to visit and meet with specific companies to discuss their needs and explore operational issues with a view to establishing partnerships and joint ventures with local firms,” a spokeswoman for the Aberdeen chamber said.

According to the newspaper the Scotsman, members of the mission will also be holding a series of briefings where they will talk about their government’s policies on oil development and provide an update on potential future developments in the North Malvinas Basin.

“While the delegation is particularly interested in exploring and developing joint work opportunities in its growing energy industry, the delegates represent a range of industries including fishing, shipping, transport and construction and local businesses which are well placed to provide necessary support infrastructure,” explained Jon Woodwards, the international director for AGCC.
