Vélez Sarsfield (37 pts) stepped up front and won the big Clausura Tournament's final at home in the José Amalfitani Stadium in Liniers neighbourhood. Thus, Vélez overcame the one point deficit they trail Huracán (38) to end at top (40 points).

The team coached by former striker Ricardo Gareca had one only possible result for today's match in order to obtain their 7th Argentine Football First Division title: a victory. On the other hand, Huracán only needed a draw to celebrate.

Angel Cappa's team won the most games in the Clausura Tournament -12 wins in 19 games- along with Lanús that early today defeated San Martín 3-2 and also reached 12 victories. Huracán had arrived to the final by showing the most powerful offense with 35 goals scored; while Vélez always trusted his tactical order and their strong defense which only allowed 13 goals and conceded one defeat only throughout the tournament (Huracán ended with 5 losses).

Today's game is the second time that two teams contending for the championship meet at the final round since short tournaments were implemented in Argentina (back in 1991). Last time was in 1994 when Huracán, that were leading the standings, had to visit Independiente -trailing by one point- at the last game. That day Independiente crashed Huracán with an outstanding 4-0 performance.

Vélez's victory will add another Cup to their previous six first division championships in their long Rich history (1968, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2005), while Huracán was seeking for their 6th star after have won the leagues of 1921, 1922, 1925, and 1928 (during amateur era) and 1973 (professional era).
