Uruguay Senate puts Unasur over the top
Uruguay's Senate approved the country's entry into the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), becoming the ninth member in the 12-nation bloc to ratify the treaty - along with Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Surinam and Guyana - thus giving the founding charter official status.
The treaty was ratified with 20 votes in favour from the ruling Broad Front coalition and the opposition National Alliance and 6 against from former President Luis Alberto Lacalle's National Unity and the Colorado Party.
Argentina's Foreign Ministry expressed "satisfaction" over the news, calling it a "transcendental moment" for the Unasur.
