Clausura Tournament
Huracán and Vélez on a photofinish
The battle for the First Division championship Clausura tournament remained evenly poised for Huracán and Vélez Sarsfield after yesterday's results although Lanús dropped out. For the last fixture between the two main contenders Huracán have the advantage of only needing a draw to stay ahead of Vélez but their rivals will be on home ground.
Yesterday a draw was good enough to keep Vélez well in contention. Tying 1-1 away to Lanús while playing a man short was almost as good as a win and just as effective in knocking Lanús out of the title race (three points behind it, Lanús would still be in it were it not for the fact that somebody will have to win points in the final Vélez-Huracán showdown).
In the first half, Vélez generally outplayed an uncertain Lanús missing its suspended playmaker Sebastián Blanco but it was the home team who took the lead via the prolific José Sand in the 32nd minute. With the woodwork frustrating Vélez at the end of the first half and the expulsion of Fabián Cubero right at the start of the first, it did not seem to be the Liniers team's day but it was the turn of Vélez to score against the run of play in the second half with Uruguayan Hernán López converting a brainless Emir Faccioli penalty in the 69th minute. A brilliant Vélez goalie Germán Montoya then preserved the tie, which was sealed by Faccioli's expulsion in the 87th minute.
Huracán thrashed a defensive Arsenal of Sarandí 3-0 at home, dominating the match well before Cristian Pellerano was sent off in the 24th minute although they did not open the scoring until Mario Bolatti's head glanced home a Patricio Toranzo free kick in the 37th minute. Late goals by Toranzo and Matías De Federico (80th and 82nd minutes) were more necessary to reflect Huracán's superiority than to clinch the result.
