Argentina signs nuclear cooperation deals with CERN
Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner met with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) officials today in Switzerland. After visiting the organization's headquarters, she witnessed the signing of various cooperation agreements between the Argentine government and the organization.
The CERN is located on the border with French territory. There, Fernández was accompanied by a delegation which consisted of Argentine Science and Technology Minister Lino Barañao, Foreign Affairs Minister Jorge Taiana and Labour Minister Carlos Tomada. The Argentine Ambassador in the United States Héctor Timerman and Mario Benedetti, the National University of Mar Del Plata's Instrumentation Laboratory director, were also part of it.
They were welcomed by the organization's director, Rolf Heur, who explained the functioning of the Particles Accelerator, the experiment which includes twenty Argentines in the team. Later, he signed the "Scientific and technical cooperation agreement for high energy physics and related technologies" with the delegation.
Lino Barañao signed in name of the Argentine government. The agreement stipulates that "the objective is to define a framework for the government, through its Science and Technology Ministry, to contribute to the CERN's development through investigation, development and construction of energy sources for accelerators." Both parties outlined that the collaboration is only aiming at pacific objectives.
