Seeing the truth behind the lie

A scene from La gran magia, starring Gustavo Garzón and Víctor Laplace.

By Juan Carlos Fontana

For the Herald

LA GRAN MAGIA. Italian playwright Eduardo de Filippo (1900-1984) will perhaps be best remembered for his stage play Filumena Marturano, directed for the big screen by Vittorio de Sica and starring Sophia Loren in a version internationally released as Marriage Italian Style.

But other than Filumena Marturano, De Filippo wrote, among other great plays, Sik-sik, l’artefice magico (Sik-sik the Magic Maker / La gran magia, 1929). Written in the period between the wars, Sik-sik... is about illusion, faith and material speculation against the background of armed conflict and utter poverty.

A magician and his wife; a millionnaire, his wife and his lover, a tango songstress, find themselves in a luxury Italian hotel. The magician courteously asks the millionnaire’s wife to participate in a trick, and has her vanish before the very eyes of her husband.

A contemporary of Luigi Pirandello, De Filippo too resorts to the technique of play-within-a-play to bespeak human weaknesses.

Good performances by Gustavo Garzón, Karina K and Ana María Castel, plus Víctor Laplace, Sandra Ballesteros, Coni Marino and Marcelo Xicarts, among others. Magnificent sets by Jorge Ferrari, and dazzling costumes by Renata Schussheim. Daniel Suárez Marzal directs.

Where & When. At Teatro Presidente Alvear, Av. Corrientes 1659. Tel: 4374-1425 / 9470. Wednesdays to Saturdays at 9pm, Sundays at 7.30pm. Tickets $15.

SOTANO. Written by Spanish-born author Benet I Jornet, Sótano plays out one of the mysteries of human existence: to what extent they will go not to see the positive things in life.

This is a game of pretence in which two characters ponder the meaning of identity and why, when we believed we had it all carefully thought out, something points out to the contrary.

A man is almost run over by a motorist, who asks him to his home to check out on him after the nearly fatal accident. Host and guest share a beer and chatter the hours away until they realize they do not fit in the moulds they had always figured themselves in, a territory of self-rediscovery in which nothing seems to be what it was at first.

Brilliant performances by Boy Olmi and Alejandro Paker. Xavier Albertí directs.

Where & When. At Teatro Margarita Xirgù, Chacabuco 875. Tel: 4300-8817, 4307-0066. Fridays and Saturdays at 9pm, Sundays at 8pm. Tickets $70.

CUANDO TE MUERES DEL TODO. Argentine writer Daniel Dalmaroni’s play is a satire built from a police story that’s more like a divertimento.

In Cuando te mueres del todo (When you finally die out), an abusive husband finds, much to his surprise, that his wife takes too long to die, much longer than would be natural.

Oblivious, blind to this situation, the husband’s lover, his parents, and a psychologist all play Ouija board.

Well directed by Pablo Flores Maini. With: Martín Amuy, Julia Carrón, Alejandro Kersfeld, Florencia Mallagray, Sebastián Sánchez, Aluhe Sosa and Antonella Sturla.

Where & When. At Teatro Colonial, Av. Paseo Colón 413. Tel: 4342-7958 / 1362. Fridays at 9pm. Tickets $30 and $25.

LA PREGUNTA AL DESTINO (ANATOL). Arthur Schnitzler’s Anatol (1893) is deviced as a series of seven acts about a bourgeois playboy and his immature relationships.

Set in late 19th century, Anatol focuses on two young friends and their sentimental relationships with women.

While fear prevents Anatol from attaining happiness, his friend tries to talk some sense into him and to accept his true feelings, when all they both knew and seemed to be capable of were fleeting romance and lack of commitment.

Good performances by Mariana Castillo, Fedra Duarte, Carolina Fassa, Germán Gayol, Natalia Laphitz. Emiliano Delucchi directs.

Where & When. At Taller del Angel, Mario Bravo 1239. Tel: 4963-1571. Sundays at 8pm.
Tickets $35 and $25.
