OAS' Insulza says Arizona immigration law 'discriminatory'

A border wall set up in the state of Arizona.

The Secretary General for the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, spoke earlier about the situation that thousands of Latin American immigrants face in the state of Arizona and spoke about "the concerns of the OAS, of the Secretary General, and of the Latin American community over the passing of a law in the US state of Arizona that we consider to be discriminatory against immigrants, and in particular against the population of Latin American origins living in that country."

Insulza, who travelled to El Salvador to take part in a meeting of the Latin American Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against People with Disabilities, warned about the possibility of "this law equating immigration with crime," adding that it could "create the basis for a racial discrimination that we consider to be unacceptable."

In that sense, Insulza valued "the quick reaction from United States President Barack Obama, who criticized the law and said that all countries have a right to regulate immigration within its borders, but this does not mean disrespecting human rights and creating racial stereotypes that are unrealistic."

Along with reiterating the importance of the US government's reaction, which came quickly after the announcements regarding the law, Insulza said that he hopes that "the law is never applied against Latin American residents and immigrants." Finally, and in reference to the benefits brought about by those Latin American immigrants living and working in the United States, he added that "the large majority of them have social responsibilities and provide economic benefits for that country."
