The overthrown constitutional president of Honduras, Head of State Manuel Zelaya, confirmed that US Ambassador to Honduras Hugo Llorens stated that his country "remains recognizing him as the only President of Honduras."

"The US is still admitting that I am the only head of state Honduras has," Zelaya expressed at the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa, where he lives as a refugee since September 21st. According to Zelaya, Llorens described Hondura's general elections -held in November 29, in which Porfirio Lobo turned out to be the elected president- as "portraying no legitimacy to state that the elected president is able to manage the country's administration in peace."

Zelaya assured: "US has already confirmed it and they are confirming it again: elections are not enough to guarantee that Honduras is able to rebuild the state of law." In addition, he warned that if the incumbent Lobos "is really willing to change Honduras" he has to establish a dialogue with the people. Zelaya sees Honduras as a country walking along a "path of transformation": that is why he insists on the idea that Lobos should start a round of talks "in order to search for what the country needs."

The overthrown president refused to state when he is to leave Brazilian Embassy or whether he is planning or not to ask for asylum in another country. He showed a strong stance: "I am willing to remain loyal to the Honduran people," he expressed.

He highlighted the fact that de facto regime presided by Roberto Micheletti asked for him to resign. "But I am not quitting," he assured. His surprising return to Honduras posted the need to start a dialogue among every sector in the country, "so as to seek ways to create a pacific way out of this political crisis," Zelaya described.
