River rises in Concordia as rain hits region harded
The northeastern City of Concordia (Entre Rios province) is the most hit by the floods and the river rose again by over 120mm during the first hours of the day as a storm hit the region with heavy rain.
National meteorological service was forecasting good weather but a storm hit Concordia this morning and "the Uruguay River keeps rising," said the city's mayor, Gustavo Bordet. "We are deeply concerned," he added, after over 12cm of rain fell on the region.
In an interview with a local radio, the mayor confirmed 7,000 people have been evacuated and the hopes of having them return to their homes were fading away, as showers continue to affect the area.
Heavy rain hit the city at 7am. However, Bordet said he felt relief that no human life was taken by the natural disaster. "We all work in an emergency situation in order to make the lives of the people hit by the flood somehow better," he said.
"Our priority was to protect the human lives and, thanks to that, no life was taken by the water," the mayor concluded.
National meteorological service announces better weather for the coming three days, which brings hopes of seeing the water go down.
