Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana described Saturday’s visit of President Cristina Fernández and her Chilean counterpart, Michelle Bachelet de Kirchner to the Vatican as “historical,” as part of the commemorations of the 25th anniversary of the papal mediation between both nations over the Beagle border dispute.

"It will be the first time that the Holy See meets the both women, who are heads of state, together," Taiana noted. The meeting between Pope benedict XVI, Bachelet and Fernández de Kirchner is scheduled for tomorrow. Taiana, Tierra del Fuego Governor Fabiana Ríos and other high ranking officials of the Kirchner administration are part of the Argentine delegation.

"The 1984 treaty put an end to a situation of tension of a possible armed conflict generated by the abhorring dictatorships that would have faced and destroyed sister nations," he added.

The intervention of late Pope John Paul II was a key in the resolution of the conflict, sending Cardinal Antonio Samoré, who mediated between the parties.
