Judge Cabral to become new Council of Magistrates’ president
Judge Luis Cabral was selected as head of the Council of Magistrates. The judge was already a member of the council in charge of appointing judges and administrating the Justice's budget. He obtained a wide majority of his pairs' votes today and will take office in 2010.
Since October 2006, Cabral is one of the three representatives of the Judiciary within the Council, along with Luis María Bunge Campos and Miguel Angel Gálvez. The judge will become the fourth president of the Council since its creation following its creation in 2001.
Cabas chaired the Argentine Association of National Justice Magistrates (AMJN) for eight years and took part in the Liaison Board for Judicial Reform. He also was a professor at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).
Nicolás Fernández will become Cabral's deputy-chariman of the Council. Until now, he was the representative of the Senate at the Council.
A wide majority of seven of the 13 members is required to appoint the chairman and the deput-chairman of the council.
