Meeting was requested by City's Mayor
Bergoglio says Macri has 'failed' in his political task
Buenos Aires Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio criticized Buenos Aires City Mayor Mauricio Macri for having "gravely failed" at his task of governing because of his position on gay marriage.
Bergoglio held a meeting with Mauricio Macri at the Archbishop's City headquarters, and both men discussed the issue surrounding Macri's support of gay marriage after signs were posted along various city streets showing a male homosexual couple kissing under the question of "did you vote Macri for this?"
The meeting also came eight days after a city judge allowed a homosexual couple to marry.
During the meeting, Macri told Cardenal Bergoglio that his political position obligates him to "strive for liberty and equality" among the people.
While the Church gave out a brief communiqué about the meeting's agenda, Macri held a press conference during which he admitted to having "different opinions despite being Catholic."
Bergoglio's communiqué said that Macri's job is to take the necessary measures to guarantee "legal certainties."
"The Constitution and the national Penal Codes can not be modified by a primary judge. Modifications must be approved by the head of the Executive branch and all measures must be taken to guarantee legal certainties during the process, which in this case are lacking, and that is where the possibility of appeal comes from," said the Archbishop.
Macri, however, formulated his declarations to the press on based on more than his religious views.
"I said that it was one point of view on the issue. My decision has to do with personal choices, because the task of a politician is to strive for liberty and equality without mixing in religious beliefs," said Macri.
He also said that "we understand Bergoglio's position and we respect it," adding that he is convinced that the relationship with the group of religious leaders will remain the same despite the differences that have risen.
