President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner will travel to the Vatican to participate, along with Chile’s Michelle Bachelet, in a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI for the 25th anniversary of the 1984 Peace Treaty between both countries.

The meeting will be held on November 28 in Rome, and both political leaders with thank the Vatican for the “role” they played in getting the treaty underway.

Towards the end of 1978, Chile and Argentina almost went to war over territorial issues, but then-Pope John Paul II intervened, which led to the signing of the treaty.

Once the meeting with Pope Benedict XVI is finalized, Fernández de Kirchner will travel to Portugal to participate in the 19th meeting of the Heads of State and Government of Latin America, Spain, Portugal and Andora, which will be held from November 30 to December 1 in Estoril.
