Beach Soccer World Cup 2009
Argentina beats Russia, but it wasn't enough
Argentina's national beach soccer team won after a penalty definition over European Champion Russia, but did not qualify for the quarter-finals of the Beach Soccer World Cup held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Argentina ended up third in the Group C with five points, the same amount as Italy who defeated Costa Rica 3-1, but turned out to be second because it had defeated the national team 3-2 at the first game of the Cup.
During the first period of the game, Russia managed to score twice, while Argentina's Luciano Franceschini scored from a free kick.
Russia scored its third goal at the second period, but Federico López Hilaire managed to tie the result by scoring two goals during the third period.
The result lead to an extra time in which there were no goals, but during the last minute Argentina's goalkeeper Marcelo Salgueiro was sent off and defender Santiago López Hilaire took his place during the last minutes of the game.
The game ended in a penalty definition in which Argentina (with its substitute goalkeeper César Mendoza) scored 4 goals and Russia 3, leaving Argentina as the winner of the game, but not able to continue its way on the World Cup.
On Friday, Italy will face Brazil, while Russia plays against Switzerland in the quarter finals.
