Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez said that US President Barack Obama should give up his Nobel Peace Prize because the agreement reached between Colombia and the United States is incompatible with Obama's acceptance of the aforementioned tribute.

Chávez repeated that the United States is preparing for "war" against Venezuela through the use of military bases on Colombian territory, which is why he has called on his citizens to prepare for the defense.

"The United States government is a champion of cynicism, and Obama should give up his Prize in the name of dignity, decorum and respect," said Chávez after having voted in the internal elections of the PSUV socialist party in Venezuela, according to a news agency.

The political leader added that Obama "is sending more troops into Afghanistan, and women and children continue to die in Pakistan and Iraq, while the United States continues to support the coup in Honduras."

Chávez also repeated that he would not accept a South American intervention in order to reduce tensions along the border between Venezuela and Colombia, because it is an issue that deals with sovereignty and there is nothing left to discuss.

"Sovereignty will not be discussed, and we are asking the US government to demonstrate what they are doing for peace, we are asking Obama, who came to Trinidad, spoke to us and promised change," he said.

Chávez went on to question the changes that Obama has promised, asking "What changes? The coup in Honduras, the bases in Colombia, the US navy presence in the Carribean? This is a threat to peace in Latin America. We have made it clear that we do not want war. Our war is one against hunger, insecurity, and crime."

"They are trying to cover up the truth, and the truth is that they are forming teams for a war," said the Venezuelan President.
