Out in the Buenos Aires theatres
This week at the movies
Incurable film buffs will have plenty of choice today, as four new Argentine productions — two fiction features and two documentaries — get their local premiere, and three foreign movies from different genres will modify (though not expand) the cinematic offers in Buenos Aires.
• EL ULTIMO VERANO DE LA BOYITA. (Argentina, 2009). Director Julia Solomonoff (Hermanas / Sisters, 2005) goes introspective again with the story of the sexual awakening of two kids during a short summer stay at an estancia. With: Guadalupe Alonso, Nicolás Treise, Mirella Pascual, Gabo Correa, Guillermo Pfenning. Running time: 89 minutes. NC13.
• SANGRE DEL PACIFICO. (Argentina, 2009). Actor Boy Olmi’s directorial début is about an old visual artist who, well aware that the reaper is not that far off, attempts to make a film about Argentina’s Independence wars.With: China Zorrilla, Ana Celentano, Delfi Galbiatti, Ezequiel Díaz, Emilia Paino. Running time: 100 minutes. NC13.
• ALICIA Y JOHN. EL PERONISMO OLVIDADO. (Argentina, 2009). A political documentary directed by Carlos Castro, within the framework of the series Vidas Argentinas. Alicia y John... follows the uneven relation between leftwing Peronist John William Cooke and Perón himself. With: Carlos Portaluppi and Ana Celentano. Running time: 85 minutes. NR.
• ELLOS SON, LOS VIOLADORES. (Argentina, 2009). Documentary tracing the genesis of Los Violadores, Argentina’s first punk band, Running time: 98 minutes. NC13. Please notice that Ellos son... is screened only on Saturdays at the ArteCinema (Salta and Garay, Constitución).
• WHITEOUT (TERROR EN LA ANTARTIDA, US/Canada, 2009). A thriller set against an unusual background: Antarctica. US investigator Carrie Stetko tries to disentangle a mysterious murder. Directed by: Dominic Sena. With: Kate Beckinsale, Alex O‘Loughlin, Shawn Doyle, Columbus Short, Tom Skerritt, Gabriel Macht. Running time: 100 minutes. NC13.
• MR. 73 (MR. 73, LA ULTIMA MISION, France, 2009). A cop about to go into retirement, alcoholic and persecuted by the ghosts of the past, tackles one last mission: finding a serial killer in Marseille. Written and directed by: Olivier Marchal. With: Olivia Bonamy, Daniel Auteuil. Running time: 123 minutes. NC16.
• MOSCOW, BELGIUM (VOLVER A AMAR, Belgium, 2009). Romantic comedy about a 29-year-old truck driver and a 41-yr-old working mother. Directed by: Christophe van Rompaey. With: Jurgen Delnaet, Barbara Sarafian, Julian Borsani, Claudia Ferri, Anemone Valcke, Johan Heldenberg. Running time: 101 minutes. NC13.
