Killing of policeman, robbery in Recoleta deepen debate over security
The debate over the security in Argentina is going further after a police officer, Marcelo Jáuregui, was killed early this morning in the Florencio Varela locality, Greater Buenos Aires, and a public prosecutor's house was robbed in the Recoleta neighbourhood, City of Buenos Aires.
BA province Police chief Juan Carlos Paggi today said that "crime rate went down" but that the level of violence has become "irrational". During an interview with a local radio, Paggi added that 14 policemen were killed since the beginning of the year.
The BA province police chief underlined the importance that "Daniel Scioli, the Governor of the province, gives to the security matter". Paggi explained that Scioli renewed the police vehicles, updated the technology and "is fighting in favor of laws that prevent dangerous criminals from being freed too early."
Regarding the case of the policeman, the province police chief said that the investigators were still evaluating every possibility for the motive of the killing.
Marcelo Jáuregui, an officer from the Buenos Aires province police, was killed this morning by ‘between five and seven gunshots' in his car, in the Florencio Varela district. Local media quoted police sources as saying that the 46-year-old was off duty, with a transvestite prostitute, when two thugs arrived at the scene and made the transvestite get off the car.
The motive of the crime is still being investigated, one possibility being that the thugs wanted to rob the car and shot the policeman when he pulled out his gun. However, the criminals ran away after killing the scientific police officer. One of the criminals might have been hurt by a gunshot, as blood stains were found 50 meters away from the car.
In the city of Buenos Aires, a public prosecutor's house was broken into this morning, while the whole family was inside, in the Recoleta Neighbourhood. The thugs robbed several valuables and escaped.
Yesterday evening, two thugs broke into the house of Argentine actress Georgina Barbarossa in Mar Del Plata (Buenos Aires Province) while she was having dinner with her family.
"They recognized me, and said they were sorry but that they needed to eat," she told local media today. The thugs stole 2000 pesos, jewelry and electronic goods. "This is enough. How long is it going to last? We can't keep on living like that," she said. "The government has to do something," she concluded.
On Saturday, another policeman was killed in the Buenos Aires province, after he attempted to stop a robbery during which the family was held hostage.
Last week, former international soccer player Fernando Cáceres was critically injured in a robbery attempt, after thugs shot at him while trying to steal his car in the Ciudadela district of the province.
