Mexico City gov't spends average of 1.4 million pesos per metro suicide
In Mexico City, each suicide costs the capital over 1.4 million pesos (108,646 US dollars), for service suspension and rescue teams, according to government sources.
"The metro system for Mexico City is the most comfortable transportation system, and the cheapest. However, a suicide on any of its lines brings serious consequences, which includes transporting 20,000 less passengers, an average of one hour of service cancellation and a monetary loss of over 1.4 million pesos," said the government.
The average number of suicides in the capital, per year, is about 30 persons, according to statistics from the Mexican media.
Millions of people use the transportation system in Mexico City because of its rapid and low-cost characteristics.
Tickets cost two pesos each (15 US cents) and allow passengers to move from one line to another.
Users of the metro system have to spend an average of 3.5 times the cost of the initial metro ticket to move around the city on other transportation means.
