Agency says it is willing to talk
IMF rules out Argentine economy monitoring 'for the moment'
The International Monetary Fund dismissed reports that it was planning to monitor the performance Argentine economy, a spokeswoman of the agency said.
The monitoring of the economic performance, established by article four of the organization, are normally conducted yearly on the countries of the organization.
Argentina, nevertheless, suspended them in 2006, after it paid off its debt with the IMF. The government is reportedly resisting reports that may show data different to that of the statistics of the INDEC, which is believed to be underreporting inflation. The resumption of the permanent supervision is seen as a necessary step toward Argentina's return to international financial markets as the government's coffers are deteriorating as a result of increased public spending and a trade surplus reduction.
"We are prepared and open to start consultations of article four," said IMF spokeswoman Caroline Atkinson during a press conference.
"We have not yet received any specific request and we have not defined any plans for an article four of Argentina for the moment," she added.
